Bathed in a honeyed glow of nostalgia, Calder Willingham’s sweet, funny, and touching Depression-era story is perfectly suited to video. Rambling Rose, a leisurely memory film about good and decent people who are neither pious nor sanctimonious fits snugly into close quarters. Laura Dern received a Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of the guileless, sexually expressive Rose, who comes to work for an eccentric, progressive Southern family. The adolescent son (Lukas Haas) adores her, the father (Robert Duvall) comes to accept her straying nature, and the mother (Diane Ladd, who’s up for Best Supporting) implicitly understands her desire for love. Dern is incandescent as Rose, and her performance, like Rose, is entirely lacking in artifice. A
