Evans used his camera to document more of America than the sharecropper culture made famous in his and James Agee’s Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. America, a collection of pictures from 39 years of work (1927-1948) includes his powerfully harsh shots of the industrial landscapes of the North as well as the more familiar scenes of rural Southern life. The accompanying essay by Michael Brix is a brilliant exposition of Evans’ work, and Evans’ own brief essay is similarly revealing. A
