We gave it a C+

The Marryin Man is one of those movies in which nothing seems quite right. It takes place in the ’40s and ’50s, but period details come and go. It’s meant to be a screwball comedy, but stars Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin lack the requisite style. It was written by Neil Simon, but the jokes don’t have the Simon zing. A romance about a mismatched couple who keep divorcing and remarrying because they can’t resist each other, the movie should at least generate some heat. But even though Basinger and Baldwin have been gossip fodder as real-life lovers, they don’t stir up much on-screen chemistry. The best moments come from the supporting cast, particularly Paul Reiser and Fisher Stevens as two of Baldwin’s wisecracking buddies. Video viewing tip: Skim past the stars, and slow down only for the second bananas. C+
