We gave it a B+

Soundtrack albums are often less-than-inspired grab bags of B sides from semi-successful groups who need extra bucks. But no such depressing standard need be applied to Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. It shines with songs from platinum rockers Slaughter and Kiss and up-and-comers King’s X and Steve Vai. And there are some pleasant surprises, like Winger’s ”Battle Stations,” which is wilder and more musically adventurous than the band’s usual pop pap. Kiss’ remake, ”God Gave Rock and Roll to You II,” harkens to the group’s classic ’70s glam. Of the 12 tracks, only ”The Perfect Crime” by Faith No More sounds like an outtake. Interscope Records has also used this record to promote three of its baby bands, which, thankfully, have something to offer. Neverland sounds like a harder-edged U2, Primus backs its warped sense of humor with funky chops, and Love on Ice gives its hard rock a bracing, breezy feel. Perhaps this record isn’t totally excellent, but it comes pretty darn close. B+
