We gave it a B+

A fine performance by Alan Rickman, who’s earning acclaim as Robin Hood‘s Sheriff of Nottingham, is only one of the reasons to search out political horror story Closet Land, which disappeared quickly from theaters. Rickman plays an interrogator sent by his anonymous government to wring a confession from a children’s author (Madeleine Stowe) accused of weaving antistate polemics into her simple stories. While writer-director Radha Bharadwaj digs in allegorical territory mined by George Orwell, she has concocted a stylish totalitarian nightmare. It is given chilling reality by Rickman and Stowe. The only flaw is a wholly unnecessary ”explanatory” plot conclusion. B+
