''SNL'' for sale

”SNL” for sale — Lorne Michaels’ show starts selling Wayne’s World greeting cards and Blues Brothers computer games

Posted on

Church Lady T-shirts — isn’t that special? And that’s not all: A ton of paraphernalia from NBC’s Saturday Night Live is beginning to arrive in stores. The goods include cards (a Wayne’s World greeting begins, ”I got you the most excellent birthday present NOT!”); mugs (the Conehead family urges, ”Consume mass quantities”); and posters (Hans & Franz desiring, of course, to ”Pump You Up”). There’s even a Blues Brothers computer game in the works. Why the sudden leap into marketing after 16 seasons? Howard Roffman, vice president of LucasArts Licensing, which represents the merchandising effort, explains: ”The SNL production company finally felt the licensing industry was mature enough.” Mature? SNL? Is creator Lorne Michaels worried that fans will see this as a sellout? Apparently…NOT! (Michaels was unavailable for comment.)
