Boston’s Remains, a mid-’60s rock group talented enough to challenge most of the British invaders of that era, earned rave reviews as an opening act on the Beatles’ 1966 American tour, appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, and released one sparkling album that didn’t sell. The quartet, led by singer-guitarist Barry Tashian, vanished into the culty realm of record collectors and fanzines. Their album The Remains, now has been expanded for reissue with singles, outtakes, and studio conversations, supported by detailed historical annotation. It’s a fresh-sounding gem, a rocking, tuneful collection of should-have-been-hits that infuses smartly played pop with a knowing feel for rhythm & blues. Tashian’s striking vocals and memorable songs, and the Remains’ snappy, often ingenious arrangements make this 25-year-old antique a rare treat. A-
