With his thin, wispy voice, Paul Overstreet isn’t much of a singer. But paired with veteran songwriters Don Schlitz and Dean Dillon, he turns into a direct and effective tunesmith. On his second album, Heroes, he focuses on struggles for harmony on the home front and making the choice between right and wrong, just as he did in ”Forever and Ever, Amen,” and ”On the Other Hand,” two hit singles he wrote for Randy Travis. Overstreet’s messages may be too sweet for some musical palates — in his world, Daddy is a kid’s biggest hero, and an elderly woman ”supports her man” because the Bible tells her to — but to a largely sentimental country-music audience, these songs are undoubtedly the well-crafted hits of tomorrow.
