Athens, Ga., sure must be a wacky place. After all, this is the same city that brought us the retro dance hits of the B-52’s and the swirling, folksy rock of R.E.M. Representing yet another facet of this Southern musical hotbed, the blues-drenched Chickasaw Mudd Puppies are two white former art students who grew up glued to classic blues records by Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf but who also loved riotous hard-rocker Ted Nugent. These influences are quite evident on their first full-length release, 8-Track Stomp, which follows last year’s White Dirt EP. Produced by R.E.M. front man Michael Stipe and blues legend Willie Dixon, 8-Track may initially sound like a novelty record, but this collection swings and seduces. Acoustic guitarist Ben Reynolds twangs and strums with passion, and vocalist (and harmonica wizard) Brant Slay drawls and hiccups through the Mudd Pupppies’ sparse yet engaging reflections on such subjects as unattainable love — and getting stung by wasps.
