Here’s proof that absolutely anything can happen in popular culture. On Mondays through Fridays at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Saturdays at 6 p.m., the Arts & Entertainment network has been showing reruns of The Avengers, the English-made cult favorite from the late ’60s. The thriller series starred Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg as the classiest, campiest crime-fighters ever. But if you’re a fan, you may know that before Rigg, from 1962 to ’64, Macnee had a different co-star: Honor Blackman, who became briefly famous playing Pussy Galore in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger.
Now, get this: In 1964, Blackman and Macnee cut a record, a little ditty called ”Kinky Boots.” It’s a typical bit of Beatle-era pop, complete with jangling guitars and Ringo-style drumming. Recently released as a single in Avengers-crazy Britain, the song rose all the way into the Top 5 on the pop charts and for a while was selling better than Madonna’s ”Justify My Love.” How, er, fitting.
By the way, the Avengers episodes starring Blackman, never before shown in America, begin airing on A&E Jan. 25.
