Paul McCartney's all-star tribute

Paul McCartney’s all-star tribute — An inside look at the former Beatle’s birthday party for Buddy Holly

Posted on

Paul McCartney didn’t bring a guitar, but that didn’t slow the festivities at his 15th-annual birthday party for Buddy Holly. This year’s bash, held in New York on Sept. 4, was the first staged in the U.S. by the former Beatle, who owns the publishing rights to Holly’s songs. ”I wish Buddy was here,” McCartney said, to which someone in the crowd called back, ”He is!”

Holly Day
Paul McCartney shared a mike, Beatles-style, with Dave Edmunds at the tribute to Buddy Holly, who would have been 54 on Sept. 7. The celebration at the Lone Star Roadhouse began with a preview of the Broadway musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, which opens in November. The jam, led by McCartney, also featured his wife, Linda; Steve Forbert; Joe Ely; Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent of the E Street Band; and Holly’s band, the Crickets, ripping through Buddy’s hits ”Rave On” and ”Oh Boy.”
