We gave it a C+

Kevin Welch, whose tunes have shown up on albums by Ricky Skaggs and Gary Morris, fuels Kevin Welch, his solo debut, with a blend of modern country and bluegrass, often, as on ”I Am No Drifter,” slipping into the rhythmic overdrive and high-lonesome harmonies of Bill Monroe. Too many of his songs, however, sound like B-sides, with the exception of ”Hello, I’m Gone,” a wry tale of marital discord in which a Texas babe, her suitcase in the back of her pickup, stops at a gas station to make the final call: ”She dropped in a quarter/She made herself strong/And all that she told him/Was hello, I’m gone.”
