We gave it a B+

Only a heavy metal band would start an album with great waves of organ music. Nobody else in rock could get away with anything so theatrical. No other kind of band could then kick the organ aside with the strength of a rolling earthquake. But what’s really exciting is how faithfully these British metalheads manage to fulfill the promise of such a strong beginning on Blood, Fire & Love. They hurtle through hoarse, dark songs about a world where God is not so much dead as inadequate, and salvation can be found only in a desperate search for love. At their best they seem to catch fire, so strongly that in ”Blood, Fire & Love,” the album’s title song, even strings added to the mix seem to burn. Maybe the band can’t sustain such a blistering pace through all 11 songs. But then it’s not clear that anyone could. B+
